Cosmetic Tattoo by Rosalie

  • Frequently Asked Quesions

What are the pigments made from

  • Most pigments used are Iron Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, a safe non-reactive substance, and specifically manufactured for implantation into human skin; Product ingredients are listed on the pigment bottles.
  • Most pigment colours are inorganic; some lip colours are organic. The pigments are coloured powder suspended in distilled water, alcohol and glycerine.

Is it like a Tattoo?

  • Yes. Pigment is inserted into the skin (the dermis). The main differences between a body tattoo and a Cosmetic Tattoo are the type of machine used and the depth of the implant. A Cosmetic Tattoo digital or rotary machine is smaller, lighter and less powerful than the traditional Coil Machine. And a Cosmetic Tattoo usually doesn't go quite as deep as a body tattoo.
  • A Cosmetic Tattoo Artist should also understand the skin, facial structure, and have experience with make-up and design, and have a variety of suitable colours and mixes to work on the face for successful long-term results.

What does it look like on the skin?

  • Generally, the implant will look like a softly drawn pencil.
  • The colour immediately after treatment will be stronger, brighter, and possible darker than the intended colour; however in most cases the intensity of colour diminishes during the 4-14 days of the healing process.
  • Your adjustment appointment is held 6-8 weeks after treatment, and it is at this time that the true colour can be seen. Colour retention varies from person to person, and can depend on your skin type and tone, the original pigment intensity and how well you've cared for your new tattoo at home.

Does it hurt?

  • Highly effective pain control products are used during all my treatments. A topical pre-deadener is used in most treatments prior to the procedure, before the skin is punctured. After the skin is punctured, then I apply topical anaesthetics, which are very effective. Some clients say the procedure actually tickles.
  • You may choose to take pain relieving tablets or anti histamines prior to having treatments as there is can be a short time of discomfort.

What will I look like after the Treatment?

  • Immediately after the treatment there may be some swelling and slight tenderness on the tattooed area. There is no after-pain. The colours will appear much darker for up to 2 weeks during the healing process. In most cases you lose 20-40% of colour intensity during the healing process. Lip colour will lose up to 60%.
  • It is recommended that you do not make social plans, or do any energetic activity for the rest of the day after your treatment. Your swelling and puffiness will be minimal, and generally subsides within 24 hours; in some cases up to 3 days. For eyeliner it may appear that you have been crying.
  • For 2 days after treatment, do not wear eye make-up after your eyeliner tattoo, or foundation on your eyebrow tattoo; with lipliner treatments you can wear lipstick within 1 hour of your treatment.
  • You can return to your normal routine the next day (remembering your Home Care instructions!)
  • Cosmetic Tattoos are STRONGLY affected by sun, UVA, UVB, tanning beds, exfoliating and anti ageing skincare. Following post-procedure instructions of your cosmetic tattoo will help increase longevity of your investment.
  • Cosmetic Tattoos are not maintenance free, and retouches (colour boosts) are recommended every 16-24 months.
  • Cosmetic Tattoos do not completely replace conventional make-up, however they can be used as a basis for your ever day look. You can add additional eyeliners, eyebrow pencil and change your lip colour to suit any occasion.

Can I get the exact colour I use with a pencil?

  • Achieving an exact colour match would be difficult. When you apply a pencil it sits on top of the skin. A Cosmetic Tattoo is implanted under the skin, and will appear differently, depending on a variety of factors including your skin undertone, getting tan, losing a tan, and acid and oils in your skin, and the temperature. Cosmetic Tattoos can look darker when you are cool, and paler when you are warm! Taking good care of your tattoo at home is also important. Keeping your adjustment appointment 6-8 weeks after your initial treatment is vital in achieving the desired outcome.

Will Black pigments stay black?

  • All blacks will eventually look a little blue-ish or grey-ish. This could be immediately after the healing process, or after months or even years later. This will happen on both body tattoos and Cosmetic Tattoos.
  • It is for this reason that I do not use black alone on Eyebrows or Beauty Spots! Brown and orange are mixed with black to give a more natural long term colour. The darker the skin tone, particularly olive skin, the less obvious black pigment will appear, and the more chance it has of throwing a blue hue.

What else do I need to know?

  • Black Eyeliner, in some skins, in a very small percentage of people, can spread a little under the skin, giving a hazed, smudged, bruised effect of colour. Although it is rare for this colour migration to happen, you need to be aware that it can happen, and that it is totally beyond my control. Every precaution is taken, with pigment being deposited very lightly in the eyeliner area ... It is for this reason that on an initial eyeliner treatment, the implant is taken only as far as the last lash, and if an extension of the taper is desired, it can be done at your adjustment appointment.
  • Colour bleeding can also occur around the Lipline in certain skins, and with darker pigment colours.
  • If you suffer with severe allergies patch testing is recommended prior to your treatment.
  • Extended sun exposure, using Retina-A, Glycolic Acid Peels and Laser will fade out colour from all treatments. Teeth whitening products may also fade your lip tattoo colour.
  • Sun block is recommended at all times.
  • If you are using Retina-A you will need to cease using it 12 weeks prior to your treatment.
  • We cannot predict the longevity of colour in the skin. Some skins hold colour longer and stronger than others, while others fade leaving a lighter residue in the skin. Tattoos in the eye area appear to hold better than on other Cosmetic Tattoos, and have been known to still be obvious after 20 years. It is recommended that a retouch of colour be done about every 16-24 months to keep the implant looking it's best.
  • If you suffer from cold sores, fever blisters, or any type of sore on the lips, you will have a recurrence after a Lip Treatment. The virus that causes these sores lies dormant in the body, and any trauma or stress will trigger an outbreak. It is recommended that you use Zovirax, Famvir, or similar, the day prior to your treatment, and continue to use it for 4 days afterwards. Please refer to the pre-Procedure instructions that follow (below) for full details
  • You cannot give blood for a period of 12 months after any tattoo.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age, or have written consent from your legal guardian.

Eyebrow Hair-stokes and Feathering

  • Hair strokes and feathering of eyebrows fade more quickly than soft-powder brows, and are not suitable for all clients. Fair skinned clients, oily skin and large pores GREATLY reduce the ability to retain hair strokes. Where retention is successful, you will find that they will need to be retouched (colour boost) every 10-15 months. Where hair-strokes are not successful after the initial treatment, soft-powder fill will be applied at the second appointment, and if a third appointment is required, there will be an additional charge of $100.

What do I need to tell you?
It is important to inform me at the time of making your appointment if ...

  • you are pregnant, are on medication (of any kind), have any, or are being treated for any medical conditions, or if you are planning to have any Cosmetic Surgery.
  • In some conditions a doctor's letter will be necessary, specifically, if you are a diabetic, using prescribed blood thinners (aspirin, Worfarin, Cartia, etc) or have heart valve implants. If you have any of these conditions I cannot perform a cosmetic tattoo treatment for you without a letter from your doctor.
  • you suffer with keloid scarring on the face
  • you have any moles, freckles, or any known skin disorder in the area that you wish to have tattooed. A doctor's letter may be necessary, and in some cases, it may not be possible to perform the treatment.
